Life Events in School Adolescents with Psychiatric Problems

Abstract
This study is an attempt to investigate life events of middle and high school students(102 males,. 63 females) with psychiatric problems who had visited the Neuropsychiatric department of Seoul Red Cross Hospital between. August 1st, 1978 and 31st July, 1981.
The time period for life events was established six months immediately prior to the onset of psychiatric illness.
The results were ass follows;
1) The diagnostic distributions were neurosis in 44.2%, schizophrenia in 28.5%, transient situational disturbances in 9.1%, affective disorders in 7.3% and behavior disorders in 6.1%.
2) The most frequent life .events reported amongst all subjects were academic problem in 34.,5%, trouble with parents in 15.2%, financial difficulties. in 13.3% and trouble with friend in 13..3%.
3) Subject in their final years at both middle and high school showed significantly-high incidence of life event in item of academic problem(middle; 43.1%, hhig;.68.8%).
4) In the schizophrenics, the common events were trouble with parents(25. 5%), financial difficulty(17.0%) separation of parent(17.0%) and death of family(12.8%).
In the neurotics, academic problem was the most frequent life event, ¢¥ and trouble with friend and personal injury or illness¢¥ were the next in rank.
